Youth Programs
The Victory Women of Vision, guided by its strategy, is poised to bring their unique services provided to a new level. We encourage our youth to get involved in school and community activities, as well as work gatherings to help develop their skills and reach their potential and goals. VWV after school program has also worked with translators and interpreters to help with students that have had difficulties understanding English but better understood other languages like Swahili, French, Arabic.
Mentoring
Selected based on assessments of the youth’s individual needs and goals in the realms of their educational/employment endeavors, as well as their social lives and ties to the community. Mentor orientation is based on the needs of the youth. Based on their needs, mentees will be matched with trained mentors. All mentors will participate in a group mentor training, which be developed and provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters New Hampshire based on: their ability to speak English, age, size of the group, modalities of the sessions (in person or online), ways to incentivize mentees to help them stay committed for full year, matches based on common interests and centered on the youth’s interests, and goals and the nature of their mentorships.
Cross Cultural Program
The program is designed to strengthen students’ sense of identity while offering them a place to celebrate their diversity. To know oneself, one’s values, strengths and areas for improvement are important for all potential leaders and even more so for teenagers leaving home and moving to a new culture.
This portion of the curriculum is built on the metaphor of the “Tree of Life”, which is used for participants to re-examine who they are and where they come from, their culture, their values, and their visions for the future.
Leadership Beyond Boundaries
It’s called the advanced class as it brings students to the next level of leadership where they can bring their plans to fruition. They are trained to advocate for themselves and to network with others while learning communication and advocacy skills.
Drivers Education
Our driver’s education classes were initially intended as an incentive to only our New American’s youth involved in our Cross leadership after school program. Now we have expanded our classes to accept other teens and adults regardless of whether they are involved in our program or not.
Empowerment
Through Photography and Narrative
VWV uses narrative and photography to build social engagement, empathy and pride in our youth and provide our elders with social engagement which can assist in their general cognitive and emotional health.
Empower Program
The VWV Youth Empowerment program focused on middle and high school refugee and minority youth. Most students are originally from Africa but program also included Latino students as well as some from Asia and the Middle East. Most are low income. The program involved several afterschool groups focused on youth empowerment and academic success. There was a middle school and high school program open to all Manchester students. Groups sessions covered issues students dealt with both at home and school.
Welcoming Club
The welcoming club was the brainchild of our New American students who wanted to help newly arriving students avoid the difficulties they faced. The club works to integrate newly arrived New American students into the school environment using New American student mentors. Mentors help them navigate their way around the school, understand the expectations of teachers, and make friends in a positive social environment.
Summer Camp
VWV continues the program during the summer with a combination of fun, physical activities such as dance, cooking class, Art and Craft, field trips and a civic engagement project which the youth plan and implement with staff assistance. The summer camp involved kids aged 10-17 and At the end of the summer camp the youths celebrate with families and guest by showcasing their dance and cooking experience.
Tutoring
In 2020, in partnership with Saint Anselm, we had 30 students who signed up for our remote tutoring program. VWV still offer tutoring by student request when needed.
